Hindcast: Pokemon Red and Blue

My first contact with these two games takes place in 2002. Surprisingly, give me one game boy color as a gift of communion! Oddly enough, even still costing about € 100 although the market had already left the Game Boy Advance. I mean ... it was not cheap.

And that day I tried it, and also craves. Although unfortunately never get to have fun then, because a couple of months after I broke the cartridge and the person I had bought had not kept the receipt of purchase. That is, that screwed me the game and I was disappointed.

But Why?

Since 1999 pokémon was a revolution in Spain, because it was the date that Telecinco anime bought the rights for broadcast in Spain. So attracted so much here, we all wanted to be Ash. And while Red and Blue (The protagonists of both games) are not exactly Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak (The protagonists of the game were the inspiration of manga, and while the anime is based on manga ... freely, do not look too), Nintendo was smart to put those same names to choose from. We have served the adventure ... But who was behind the games?

Speaking of Pokemon Red and Blue is talking about the company behind the games: Game Freak. And talk about the company in our case, means studying the man who is behind the company in question. Satoshi Tajiri.

Tajiri, at the time of Pkmn Pearl / Diamond

It's possible you that you have ever seen in a Japanese series shinchan style, which ever leave the forest and put search insectos.Con our man also happens because his childhood was spent in an area of Tokyo that is still ruralized. (Yes, the Japs love bugs, particularly beetles. Was said that as a child, Tajiri wanted to be an entomologist)

But then, a Japanese city is not without an arcade. Hence the young Tajiri would take his love for video games. These experiences will be worth as inspiration for Pokémon, as we know it today.

But my intention is to speak broadly (if you want empaparos of all aspects of your life, I'm not your man) let's skip the early childhood of the man, to his youth. Thirty years ago, he founded a fanzine magazine along with his friend Ken Sugimori. Can you guess the name? Game-Freak.

And with it while ... and success, the magazine decided to change activities. It would of Fanzines ... video games.

In 1990, our man speak to Nintendo of what would have to be Pokémon ... and they gave the green light. The game, in fact should have been completed for the following year. In 1992 was canceled completely, with all original music finished.

What reason? Game Freak going through bad financial times, but thanks to the success of other games company (Yoshi's Story for game boy and Nes) were able to recover the funds necessary ... and to resume development changed the original name (Capumon) to Poket Monsters ( Pokémon, come on)

This project was not the only one, because it also focused on other projects (of which we will not talk more than necessary). Finally, managed to develop the game, after several financial devacles.

Where does your inspiration? Well, as I said above. Tajiri was inspired by the world of search of insects, as well as 2 video game franchises:
Dragon quest. Probably the most popular saga rpg Japan. There is a law that you can only get these games the holidays, because with the first people ... is vitiated and not working, or going to school. In Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy also came. Both sagas, parents of all current rpgs were big influences to the creative mind of Pokémon.

Dragon Quest 5, Version Nintendo Ds. (2009)

Final Fantasy I, Nes

I may highlight specific game, but went to the Japanese market and started developing pokémon (mine is a hypothesis, we do not know exactly the concept of the series when the development had begun)
Dragon Quest V, released only in Japan in 1992 for Super Nintendo. It is one of the first games in which the protagonist can capture monsters for use in support. But it is a mere assumption, and I have no proof ... just the fact that dragon quest is a mass phenomenon in the land of the rising sun.

Anyway, finally came to market in 1995. The first version, called Red and Green, only came out in japan.

Subsequently, "reissued" both games by 1996. It would not be red and green, but red and blue. If you see the home screen, you will see noticeable differences. As seen, the graphics are completely redesigned for issues that concern us (The red / blue / yellow even have some colors)

This is an example of green pokemon battle. Removing the graphical aspects, changes that differentiate red and green of the games that came out the following year ... would be the pokemon esclusivos of each cartridge and the redesign of some areas like Mewtwo's dungeon.

Kanto, the region of Red and Blue

We are in a fictional world in which human beings live and strange creatures called Pokemon. And to quote Professor Oak, you can be your friend ... or use them to fight. Against who? Against the eight gym leaders and then against the pokémon league to become a teacher. But that's not the only goal of the game. With the motto of the series, we knew we had to do. Gotta catch them all! (Add all XD) Play the role of a preteen who go out of their village (Pallet Town) with a pokemon that has been delivered by Oak to meet the target the song says:

I will become the best, the best there will ever ...

But perhaps the strangest thing about these games came with the last weeks of development. Originally, the first generation of Pokemon only had 150 of these. But before compiling, after removing unnecessary codes, spare 300 bytes ... ridiculous space, but enough to include a creature: Mew.

It was one of the strangest, and I could learn any attack, and could not be captured.

But by using the secret pokemon as an asset, sales increased. Some people discovered the legendary by accident, and Game Freak decided to organize a contest in which the winners would have to Mew for them.

This increase in sales, Nintendo encouraged to take the game around the globe Tajiri ... specifically the Red and Blue versions. In America arrived in 1998 and Europe in 1999, more or less like the series.

The game's story, as I have mentioned is not complex. It is a story that follows the topic of "Legar to be the greatest." Defeat the gyms and the high command of the Pokemon league to be the best coach, and get the 150 Pokemon to be ... not the best coach but the POKÉMON MASTER. Moreover, the absolute majority of the characters we would get a absolutely flat EEG. In fact, Red barely speaks throughout the game. But do not play this game or its story nor its characters.

Perhaps one of the most attractive were the multiplayer features: It is said that Tajiri was inspired to do that, watching two boys playing with game boys lanes next to each other. And with the help of a cable to connect the consoles, you could connect them to fight the team of a friend ... or get the Pokemon that you needed to complete the Pokédex from Oak.

I present to Ken Sugimori

Graphically it is very vistoso.Los graphics are flashy and are beautifully drawn, with even some colors. Much of the artwork was designed by Ken Sugimori, in addition to this has been commissioned to design the vast majority of existing Pokémon, and has collaborated with manga, anime, movies and sagas like Smash Bros. But one name not representative, and being the start of a series like this. Among the character design, maps, creatures working about 10 people (A reasonable amount considering that a small study ERA) But the first time I played, the graphics not struck me at all, it's what helped to immerse myself in this strange yet familiar ... universe. It was music.

The music was possibly the first to be finished (above mentioned that by 1992 approximately) and a look that makes you completely identify with the game. Pokemon's music was composed by Junichi Masuda, who work until Ds Generation Pokémon with music.

The creator of the music of the first Pokémon

We do not have to look far to see his work. Until Pokémon Platinum, all music has its magical imprint (now only produces, composes not apparently). And the same creatures take something of yours, because as I have understood variously participated in this activity (with statistics or something, I guess ... the sources are not explicit)

The gameplay is not exactly classic. The protagonist does not fight, but their creatures fight for him. This aspect is radically different from Final Fantasy, or even Dragon Quest. The focus of the battle is viewed from the first person (like Dragon Quest, so all you see is the back of your creature), however, capture the whole dynamic / Pokémon training is quite different to the above ( If we ignore to Dragon Quest V).

Not a game too difficult. The fighting can be overcome with slack until a ridiculously low level ... (From example, I got to spend money once having my Pokemon stronger pokemon level 40. But it is an extreme case) Knowing the game mechanics and benefits in the combat ... is possible. Perhaps there is some area ....? Heavy? Cansina? Could be. If you did not know how to go by articuno and not wearing a rope escape completely you could lose the islands foam (That's why I always went to the island by the other track cinnamon XD) The only negative factor (O positive) are the numerous glitches that let you do everything:

From going to the islands fault Borrarte catch Mew or Glitch the game thanks to the "L". Did you know that if evolucionabas your initial pokemon pokedex possess before the game could irreparably damage?

The problem with these early games is that all possible events are associated with values in hexadecimal codes. I will give you a clear example: Upon Mew glitch, what you do is you modify the code associated with the next pokemon could go, by the said legendary. And so with the islands ruling, Missigno ...

Particularly, I think all those glitches gave it a definite character to the game. And along with the music, to the same creatures ... that game joined the breeding ground that caused the Anime series provoked a mass phenomenon that already has active thirteen years and has sold more than 100 million games worldwide.

The best:
♦ Graphics showy
♦ Your music gets to the deepest
♦ Their duration can be "extended" to infinity and beyond. It is a very long game. (Eye, has drawbacks, as I say below)
♦ Power imitate Ash Ketchum ... but then could not go to the orange islands.
♦ It can become very addictive.

The worst:
♦ Some glitches you might get to fuck the game ... really. And the cartridge.
♦ The exchange pokemon with a friend was great in theory, but ... not all friends had game boy (or cable) is, not having to swap Pokemon was cool to receive a diploma from Oak.
♦ Not having Mew glitch or Busting without heading to Pokemon Stadium.
♦ Perhaps some areas (such as foam islands) may be too "complicated" when Pick up all.
♦ It can sometimes be monotonous
♦ The lack of goals into reality ... once you get past the Pokemon league is more than evident. Will last depending on the patience you have to collect all 151 Pokémon.

Conclusion: Possibly one of the best games in the series (That and going with the tastes of each, and I do not get it) and is a game that can appeal to anyone, whether hobbyist to rpg or not. Why I recommend it juguéis effusively if have not done it already.

This video is here to whet your appetite. And to the silly, silly ... I've written a review of 2000 words. I hope I have maintained the quality.

  1. Good hindcast the game. Yes, I trajó many memories, and I agree that the music is well made by Masuda. I'm playing Diamond and it shows that you have the musical touch of the first games.
